The capital and largest city in Western Australia is Perth, situated right on the coast looking out over the Indian Ocean. Also south of Perth is Margaret River, a place which is famous for two things: wine and surfing! Make sure you book onto a wine tour and sample Australia’s finest and also take to the sea to hit the waves, though probably not on the same day!

If you head north along the coast of the Indian Ocean from Perth, there are also some gems to discover. A five hour drive north takes you to Geraldton, where you can surf, windsurf and even dive on several different wreck sites off the coast as well as lay back and relax on many of the gorgeous beaches here. On your way from Perth to Geraldton make sure you stop off at Badgingarra National Park which is about halfway between the two. The park gives you a chance to have a taste of the natural wonder of the country with a vast array of iconic Australian animals calling it their home. Further up the coast is Nambung Park which is home to the simply incredible Pinnacles, limestone structures that rise from the sand dunes and loom large over the desert below. They’re an absolute sight to behold, making you feel as though you’ve stepped back to the land before time.

Bodie, California

Founded in 1876, Bodie is an American ghost town. It started life as a small mining town and grew up to have 10,000 inhabitants till 1880. There was a Chinatown with several hundreds of Chinese residents who came from China to live their American Dream. However, the resources were not infinite and so, people started leaving the town. In 1932, fire destroyed majority of the town. Bodie still managed to remain inhabited until 1962 when the last few residents left the town and the same year, it became Bodie State Historic Park and has since been opened for tourists all year round. Bodie is now unpopulated. As a visitor, you can walk through the deserted streets of the town and see interiors as they were left and stocked with goods and furniture. Now Bodie is open all year, but the long road to the town is usually closed during winter due to heavy snowfall. So, summer is the most comfortable time to visit Bodie.

Varosha, Cyprus

Decades ago, Varosha, located on the island of Cyprus in Famagusta, used to be a modern tourist destination with beaches, hotels and all that belongs to it. In 1974, Turkish invasion to this part of Cyprus brought this area under control and stopped its development violently. So, the citizens left, expecting to be able to return to their home within few days. But the Turkish army controlled it in such a way that nobody was allowed to go there except Turkish military and UN personnel. Nowadays, Government is planning to revive Varosha to its former beauty. In recent years, it will be opened for the tourism once again by Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Yashima, Japan

Yashima is located in Takamatsu which is one of major islands of Japan. Yashima once used to be one of Japan’s tourist attractions. This place has played a vital part in the history of Japan. It had been a sacred place long ago where many pilgrims used to visit every year. It houses the Yashima temple and that is the only reason why so many people go to this strangely neglected area. In 1980′s, it was decided to develop it into a modern resort. Six hotels and many smaller buildings were built, including an aquarium and a cable car that would transport the visitors to the Yashima plateau. A few years later, the small investors as well as large companies lost their savings and forced developers to give up on the project and hence, the plateau was left alone.
